On Sunday evening, comedian John Oliver dedicated an entire episode to making jokes about cryptocurrency. The usual political commentator taught his viewers – the good, the bad, and the ugly of the cryptosphere– during his show Last Week Tonight. Topics included decentralization, Bitconnect, and the blockchain itself all in a humorous way.
During the course of his show, Oliver provided a broad overview of cryptocurrency and everything in between.
The comedian took on the topic “because it’s the current year.” Oliver compared cryptocurrency to Beanie Babies, and mentioned the Wild West of the cryptosphere expressing pump-and-dump groups, and Bitconnect. He also touched on the practice of brands adding “blockchain” to their name to increase their value. Oliver then declared that he was renaming his show “Last Bit Tonight with Block Chainiver.”
Crypto enthusiasts probably wouldn’t have learned anything from Sunday’s edition of Last Week Tonight, although the show’s four million viewers should have gleaned a few insights into the cryptocurrency market amidst all the jokes. Honestly, the episode felt as if Oliver had just learned of cryptocurrency himself mere minutes before going on air, having to go through the history of cryptocurrency in a rushed manner for his audience.
ICOs were compared to Chuck E Cheese tokens, HODL was pronounced “Hoe-duhl” and Oliver also uttered famous crypto acronyms as “FUD”, “moon”, “rekt”, and “lambo” as well as other terms.
Oliver also played a video of Chris Record’s HODL GANG a Bitcoin rap remix of Gucci Gang’s song.
“Many people are buying coins for no other reason than other people are buying them,” observed the English comedian, before showing an advert for a P&D group called Crypto Calls that explained how members could profit at others’ expense.
“In speculative mania, it can be hard to tell what’s real,” Oliver noted expressing all the ridiculous names for cryptocurrencies stating many of these will turn out to have no value.
Oliver ended his segment with a section on Block.one a company that has raised a reported $1.5 billion for EOS, showing a video of Brock Pierce stating “EOS will change everything.”
According to Pierce, EOS is going to “change everything,” Oliver said.
“How is EOS going to change this iguana?” retorted Oliver. In his closing statement, Oliver instructed: “Just know that you’re not investing in crypto, you’re gambling…Caution is a tough sell when you’re up against Bitconnect and Hodl Gang,” before signing off with one final cliche: “Bitcoin could be worthless or it could be worth millions”.
Oliver even played a video of Carlos Matos and imitated his famous screaming of “Bitconnect!!!” with a parody skit called “responsibility.”
Bitcoin is currently trading at [FIAT: $9,099.29] according to Coin Market Cap at the time of this report.
